Rent Apartment in Bali: A Complete Guide
Buying or renting an apartment in Bali indeed seems like a rather weird choice. The island of Bali is known for its beautiful traditional houses and architecture and lively short-term or even long term stay accommodation businesses. You can see homestays, guesthouses, and villas propping up every step you walk there. There is a reason why you don’t see apartments as much on the Island of the Gods. That reason is that said type of property is still blooming in Bali. So then, why rent one? If you’re confused about where to start when considering to rent an apartment in Bali or not, here is a guide to rent apartment in Bali to help you brainstorm and start asking some real questions.
What are the things you need to consider?
Know your purpose of renting an apartment
Obviously, we can start from here. Asking what you want to do with the apartment in Bali is an important first step. Considering Bali is a tourism hotspot with a relatively strong real estate scene, trying to make a nice buck out of your property is always possible
Know Your Needs
After thinking about what’s your purpose there, you have to know what kind of things that I have to provide myself daily. Say like food or constantly running Wi-Fi among other needs. This consideration is important because different types of accommodation give you different kinds of facilities. Also, consider your period of stay. Thinking exactly how long will you stay will help you be more cost-effective in your Bali apartment rent preparation.
What are the pros and cons?
Now that we have given you some starting ideas on considering whether to rent an apartment in Bali or not, we would also like to give you what we think about apartments against other kinds of accommodations in Bali. Here are some pluses and minuses that we can think of.
Pros
- More personal space and personalization
With an apartment, the room is yours. As long as you don’t do anything harmful to it, you can decorate and change things up however you wanted. Other kinds of accommodations don’t allow that, and are always coming with a set of facilities, decorations, and furniture that you can use. If you like decorating and making yourself at home, then apartments are definitely for you.
- Easy access to basic needs
Apartments are often situated within or near places where you can fulfill your basic needs. Malls, city centers, or even street shops. Your apartment is usually much closer to those places compared to villas around Bali.
- A good balance between luxury and frugality
Apartments sit right in the middle when it comes to both being affordable and fancy at the same time. They are, most of the time, more luxurious than homestays or guesthouses. Yet, they are also keeping it modest in comparison to villas.
- Perfect for long term stays
Apartments are much more suited if you’re staying for more than a few months. Once you get to know your place and your surroundings living there becomes easier and exciting. Other accommodations can get boring if you stay there too long.
Cons:
- Lack of provided facilities
As we have stated earlier, sometimes the personalization of your apartment is a trade-off for lack of available services. You have to cook, clean, and prepare things by yourself.
- Often far away from the fun
We’ve told this before as well, but apartments are usually built in Denpasar or nearby places. And they are usually built inland, near main roads or city centres. This means that they can be a bit further from where the fun is.
Now that we’ve given you some pros and cons, let’s look at a particularly important part of renting apartments or any other kinds of property in Bali: regulations.
Know the Local Laws and Regulations
This is a rule particularly in Bali that you must be really careful about. Not only apartments, but other kinds of accommodations such as guesthouses, bed and breakfasts, villas, and even hotels are also included. This is because of Indonesia’s notoriously difficult land permit and regulation applications, especially for foreign-owned businesses.
What this means is that sometimes, the apartment or other kinds of property you are looking to buy (or worse, have already bought) holds a temporary license which will expire after some time. If this happens, surprise crackdowns from authorities that lead to the suspension of your place can occur.
Hence, it is better to be careful, particularly if you are thinking of rent a Bali apartment, or even buying an apartment to invest in Bali’s real estate industry. Also, there are local laws in place that determine the types of accommodations that are permissible. You can read more on our post surrounding Airbnb and property management in Bali
