One of Indonesia’s best-loved traditional dishes. Who can resist not eating juicy skewers of barbecued meats on sticks? Satay has been around for ages and has been an iconic Indonesian dish. The satay meat is grilled on charcoal until it’s caramelized and slightly burnt to get its iconic smoky flavor. Usually, satay comes with a number of condiments and side dishes. This usually includes a sweet and spicy peanut sauce, ketupat, fried shallots, and pickled cucumbers. 

Traveling to Central Jakarta, you could find many national attractions like the Monumen Nasional (Monas). Of course, due to various attractions, many culinary places grow all around Central Jakarta including the satay dishes. There are a lot of types of satay in Indonesia, and Sate Padang is one of them. Sate Padang is one of Minang’s cuisine from West Sumatra, made with beef instead of chicken or goat meat. The sauce is made from rice flour, beef broth, and spices like turmeric, hence its spicy flavor and yellow color. And Sate Padang Mak Syukur is one of the best Sate Padang spots in Jakarta. Their name is already quite famous among the people of Jakarta and is known for their delicious satay. Their meat is large and soft when bitten and the sauce is not too spicy that it overpowers the satay. They also have Ketoprak as their side-dish so you can eat it with your satay.

2. Sate Sabang Pak Heri

Sate Sabang Pak Heri is one of the most famous in Central Jakarta. Their queuing lines are always long and they have never run out of customers since they’ve opened. Their goat satay is famous for using spicy soy sauce instead of peanut sauce, great for those with peanut allergies. We recommend ordering their goat satay with their Lontong, as it is very delicious and affordable. The meat is tender and juicy and not at all hard and dry. Their spicy soy sauce compliments their satay in the best possible way as it is not too spicy and sweet. They also sell your usual chicken satay with peanut sauce if you prefer eating chicken.

3. Sate Khas Senayan

Sate Khas Senayan is probably the best-known satay restaurant franchise in Jakarta. You can find this restaurant in almost every major mall in the city. You don’t need to question their overall quality and taste as they are one of the best satay restaurants in Jakarta. They’re known for their variety of satay to choose from. They have chicken, goat, and beef satays, and also chicken skin satay as well. Not only that, but they also serve an assorted menu filled with Indonesian traditional cuisine. Balinese cuisine such as Ayam Betutu and Taliwang Sate Lilit is also available. Their satays are unique as all of them have their own distinct flavor and taste. They also serve side dishes such as Gado-gado and Lontong to eat with your satays.

4. Sate Padang Pariaman Takana Juo

Bendungan Hilir or Benhil for short is one of Central Jakarta’s administrative villages known for its diverse food scene. People from all around Jakarta and even those from other regions come here to try the local cuisines. Sate Padang Pariaman Takana Juo is one of the most popular restaurants there. They’re founded in 1949 and has also been one of the best satay spots in Jakarta. They’re known for serving Minang food such as Sate Padang and Soto Padang. The meat from the satay is very tender and it melts in your mouth and the sauce really completes the dish. Their Soto Padang is also one of their favorite menu items here. The broth is clear and tasteful and the meat is also marinated well. They also serve Keripik Balado, which is a common side-dish for satay Padang. The chips are spicy, but it is countered with the sauce and the satay itself.

5. Sate Taichan 24

Over the years, Sate Taichan had gained popularity among Indonesian people. This has made a lot of street vendors sell this particular satay and jump into the bandwagon. Sate Taichan’s main ingredient is chicken, but unlike other satays, it’s not marinated with any sauce. It is only seared with salt and lime juice, making it’s color white instead of the usual brown. It is later enjoyed with the usual Lontong with the addition of sambal, not soy or peanut sauce. Sate Taichan 24 is one of the best Sate Taichan vendors in Central Jakarta. For satay Taichan fans, visiting this place is a must. The chicken satay is delicious and the portion is generous while the price is affordable. For those who love spicy food, you can test your guts with this satay as the sambal is super spicy.
