What is a PCR Test?

PCR or polymerase chain reaction is a laboratory test to detect the presence of genetic material from cells, bacteria, or viruses. And currently, people are using the PCR to diagnose COVID-19, by detecting genetic material for the Coronavirus. The test could also detect fragments of virus even after you are no longer infected. The PCR test is the most accurate and reliable test for diagnosing COVID-19. 

When is the right time to do a PCR Test for Covid 19?

It is best to get tested with PCR Test if you have Symptoms of Covid 19 or if you have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for Covid-19. The CDC says you may have coronavirus if you have these symptoms or combination of symptoms: fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, tiredness, muscle or body aches, headaches, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea.

Symptoms may appear between two and 14 days after exposure to the virus and additional symptoms are possible. 

What do COVID-19 PCR test results mean?

Usually you will receive the results of your PCR test within 24 hours after sample collection, but sometimes it can take a few days depending on how long the sample reaches the laboratory and how long is the queue. A positive test result means that it is very likely that you have COVID-19. If the result is positive you should talk to your doctor, stay home, and separate yourself from others. While a negative test result means you probably didn’t have COVID-19 at the time you took your test. But, it is possible that you have been infected with SARS-CoV-2 but the virus in your body is not enough to be detected by the test.

How long is the validity period of the PCR test?

Usually, travelers by air transportation are required to show a negative result certificate using the RT-PCR test no later than 3 x 24 hours before departure. But to be noted not all destinations in Indonesia require a PCR test.
